ERCIM News issue #140 available now: Featuring the HIGHER Project

We are excited to announce that the HIGHER project features in the Research and Innovation section of ERCIM news (Issue 140). The article entitled HIGHER: European Heterogeneous Cloud/Edge Infrastructures for Next Generation Hybrid Services, written by HIGHER coordinator Manolis Marazakis and Stelios Louloudakis (ICS-FORTH), was published on the  21st of January 2025 and is available here.

The article highlights the growing importance of cloud and edge markets in Europe and the need for homegrown technologies to compete globally, particularly given the dominance of U.S.-made processors. It continues by presenting an overview of the HIGHER project and how aims to advance Europe’s cloud and edge computing capabilities by developing energy-efficient, data center-ready infrastructure based on European processor technologies and Open Compute Project (OCP) standards. The main goal of the project is presented (to prototype and demonstrate modular hardware for cloud and edge applications, including processor and management modules, to create flexible, scalable systems) and discusses how these systems will support multiple use cases, all designed to adhere to open-source and open-standard principles.

The ERCIM News issue #140 special theme is Large-Scale Data Analytics. This issue is packed full of interesting articles so we highly recommend downloading a copy here
